Aston Martin initially designed the DBS to accommodate its new V8 engine, but due to production challenges, the car initially featured the DB6’s 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine. Despite being larger and more opulently appointed than the DB6, the heavyweight DBS received mixed reviews due to its slightly diminished performance. However, excitement ensued when the V8 engine made its debut in 1969.

With an estimated 315bhp from its 5,340cc four-cam engine, the DBS V8 boasted remarkable acceleration, achieving 100mph in under 14 seconds and a top speed of 160mph. This outstanding performance solidified its claim as the fastest production car globally during that era. Following Aston Martin’s acquisition by Company Developments in 1972, production resumed with the Series 2, rebranded as the Aston Martin V8. The Series 2 featured a restyled front end reminiscent of earlier Aston Martins.
