Regarded by many as the ultimate representation of ‘true’ Aston Martins, the DB6 marked the culmination of Aston Martin’s enduring line of ‘DB’ six-cylinder sports saloons, making its debut in 1965 as a noteworthy evolution from its predecessor, the DB5.

While the lineage to the Touring-styled DB4 from 1958 is evident, the DB6 departed from the Carrozzeria Touring-developed Superleggera tubular body structure of its forerunners, opting for fabricated sheet steel while retaining aluminum outer panels. Despite the shift, ‘Superleggera’ badges continued to be affixed until supplies were depleted, adding an intriguing element to the transition.

The primary objective for the DB6 was to enhance rear-seat space, necessitating a 3¾” increase in wheelbase. This alteration prompted an extensive redesign, featuring a more sharply raked windscreen, an elevated roofline, and redesigned rear quarter windows. Although opening front quarter lights made a return, the most significant change was the introduction of a Kamm-style tail with a spoiler at the rear, contributing to improved aerodynamics and enhanced stability at high speeds. The integration of these changes was so seamless that, apart from the distinctive Kamm tail, one could easily mistake the DB6 for a DB5.

The renowned Tadek Marek’s exceptional six-cylinder engine, previously enlarged to 3,995cc for the DB5, remained unchanged in the DB6. With a power output of 282bhp on triple SU carburetors in standard specification, the DB6 offered a Borg-Warner automatic transmission alongside the standard ZF five-speed gearbox. Additionally, for the first time, optional power-assisted steering was made available. The DB6 received widespread acclaim, with 1462 “Mk1” examples finding buyers during its production span from 1965 to 1969.
