In the late 1950s, Rolls-Royce responded to growing competition and the aging of its six-cylinder engine by introducing the Silver Cloud II and Bentley S2 models in 1959. These vehicles maintained their classic appearance but received a significant performance boost from a new 6,230cc aluminum-alloy V8 engine. The most notable change was the relocation of the steering box. Internally, they featured Rolls-Royce’s four-speed automatic transmission and power steering.

These models were highly successful and remained in production until 1962. Besides factory-produced cars, affluent buyers could opt for bespoke versions by coachbuilders like H J Mulliner, Park Ward Ltd. The most popular choice was H J Mulliner’s two-door drophead coupé, available for both Rolls-Royce and Bentley. This handcrafted style commanded a premium price, with the convertible costing about 30% more than the standard Silver Cloud II saloon. Out of 2,417 Silver Cloud IIs produced, only 107 had the coveted drophead coupé body by H J Mulliner, with 74 being left-hand drive models.
