We’re all familiar with the rakish Volvo P1800 — the Swedish sports car that will do an honest 106 mph. Before that car raced off Pelle Petterson’s drafting table and out of Gothenburg, though, the Swedish automaker attempted to produce a sprightly convertible: the Sport P1900. The attempt was not successful, but it wasn’t entirely unsuccessful, either — between 1956 and 1957, before the company cut its losses and scrapped the project, Volvo built 68 Sport P1900 roadsters for sale around the world. Bodied in fiberglass, these distinctive cars are exceedingly rare today, yet they represent a bold move by a smaller automaker to exploit the exciting new technology that was composite construction.
