In 1930, the Hornet saloon made its debut, featuring Wolseley’s overhead-camshaft, six-cylinder engine within an extended Morris Minor chassis equipped with hydraulic brakes. It set an impressive standard in power-to-weight ratio among 1.3-litre cars, with its smooth and flexible six-cylinder engine capable of propelling the car from a standstill to over 60mph. In 1932, the model underwent a revision, incorporating a shortened, chain-driven overhead-cam engine that was repositioned forward to enhance cabin space, along with a four-speed ‘silent third’ gearbox.
For those seeking enhanced performance, the Hornet Special chassis was available, equipped with 12″ brakes and a remote-control gearshift. The Special variant featured the shortened engine with twin carburetors and an oil cooler, generating 45bhp. Depending on the coachwork, this configuration allowed for a top speed of around 75mph. As a result, the Special chassis quickly became the preferred choice for numerous independent coachbuilders who utilized the Hornet as the foundation for creating sporty two-seater vehicles.
