The Karmann Ghia, nearly as iconic as the legendary Beetle itself and boasting a dedicated fan base, was described by its maker as “A Volkswagen for people who can’t stand the sight of a Volkswagen.” Crafted by Karmann at its Osnabrück coachbuilding facility, this top-tier VW model seamlessly combined a modified export Beetle floor-pan, running gear, and engine/transmission package with elegant coachwork designed by Carrozzeria Ghia.

Debuting in 1955 with a 1,200cc engine, the Karmann Ghia evolved alongside mainstream Beetle advancements, incorporating features like all-synchromesh transmission and progressively more potent engines. The introduction of a cabriolet variant occurred in 1957, and by 1959, a subtle restyling enhanced the car’s front end, featuring raised headlamps and enlarged nose intakes.
