In December 1928, BMW acquired Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach, marking an important milestone in their history. Following the acquisition, BMW continued the production of the Dixi 3/15, which had been manufactured under license from the Austin Motor Company since 1927.
The Dixi 3/15 was originally based on the popular Austin 7 model. The earliest versions of the Dixi-made 3/15, referred to as the DA-1 (Erste Deutsche Ausführung or “first German version”), were assembled using parts produced in Germany. This model was a left-hand-drive adaptation of the original English design. Powering the DA-1 was a 748 cc engine that generated 15 PS of output.
In March 1929, BMW introduced a newly designed body for the successor to the Dixi 3/15 DA-1, which was named the BMW 3/15 DA-2. Along with the body redesign, BMW also assumed the manufacturing responsibilities for this upgraded model.
