Established in 1905 by Gabriel Voisin, Avions-Voisin, led by the aviation engineer and National School of Fine Arts alumni from Lyon, demonstrated a fusion of technical prowess and creative expertise. When Voisin transitioned to motor car manufacturing in 1919, his vehicles became marvels of engineering, distinguished by captivating designs and a substantial use of alloys like aluminum in the body construction.
Produced between 1923 and 1926, the Avions Voisin C5 targeted the luxury market. Despite facing formidable competition and boasting a substantial price tag, around 50 C5s were created. The engine claimed an impressive 100 horsepower, propelling the car to a speed of 80 mph. Notably, the C5 pioneered the use of hydraulic brakes, a system innovated by Gabriel Voisin himself. The engine featured sleeve valve technology, a choice Voisin deemed superior to the poppet valve for its extended lifespan and reduced noise signature.
As a hallmark of luxury vehicles in the 1920s, numerous C5s showcased unique coach-built bodies, further exemplifying Avions-Voisin’s commitment to both performance and distinctive aesthetics.
