1973 AMC Hornet

1973 AMC HORNET BACKGROUND
AMC had assembly plants in Kenosha Wisconsin and Brampton Ontario, Canada. There were 4 AMC Hornet models in 1973. A 2-door and 4-door sedan, a wagon (called a Sportabout) and a Hatchback. 1973 was the first year that any North American manufacturer produced a hatchback. The big three followed up in 1974 and later years with the Nova, Maverick, Duster etc. in hatchback configuration.

The X-Package basically added Rally Wheels, Rally Stripe, and Stainless bodyside trim (currently missing from this example). There could be other little things associated with the X, like the X badging, but it was essentially a little bit of “window dressing”. Most options in the package could have been ordered separately.

1973 AMC HORNET ENGINE OPTIONS
There were 4 engine options for Hornet’s in ’73. 232 inline 6cyl, 258 inline 6cyl, 304 V8, 360 V8 (360 was only available on the Kenosha Line). This car was a “special order” built in Brampton in March, 1973 and delivered in early April to Orr Motors in Ottawa. The original owner wanted the 360 V8 but they didn’t build 360 cars in Brampton. So, to avoid the wait, they settled for the 304.
