The 1972 Trans Am is a rare and highly sought-after model, with only 1,286 ever made. It was the last year to feature the 455 H.O. engine, with buyers having the option of either a TH400 automatic or an M-22 four-speed manual transmission. The 455 H.O. engine had a net horsepower rating of 300, which was the highest of any Pontiac V-8 that year.
Although the gross horsepower rating of the 1971 model was 335 hp, the net rating would have only been 305 hp, just five horsepower more than the ’72. This engine was still very powerful, and not recommended for inexperienced drivers.
