For one year only, in 1969, Mercury offered the Cyclone CJ. Based on the hallmark of the muscle-car era–big-engine antics in a mid-size package–kit on the CJ included the 428 Cobra Jet engine breathing through dual exhausts, a close-ratio four-speed manual transmission and a 3.50:1 rear-axle ratio, along with a Competition Handling Package. With performance axle ratios of up to 4.30:1 available, the CJ’s prowess opened many eyes to Mercury’s performance potential.
