Along with its ‘luxury Mustang,’ the Mercury Cougar, for 1968 Mercury offered a new-size luxury car for the young-at-heart, the Mercury Montego. Based on the new Ford Torino underpinnings, it was a more upscale offering (as all Mercurys tended to be) than what was offered across town at the Ford dealerships. Smaller than the full-size Mercurys, the Montego lineup aimed to please everyone looking for something more than a Ford, but without the full-size stodginess.
