1927 Whippet Model 96 Sedan

America’s smallest car upon its introduction in 1926, the Whippet was truly one of the most compelling vehicles of its day. Produced by Willys-Overland, the marque was to supersede the Overland as a budget automobile with a small footprint, and it was competitive in both price and performance to other cars available at the same time.

  1. Is this the car Stan gets to help Ollie and his fiance (sp?) elope in the Laurel & Hardy short subject “Our Wife”?

  2. Very nice picture of the Whippet, especially knowing that it was made by Willy’s Overland and that gives special recognition to the 1926 Chrysler Four that I own…as on June 5th of 1925 the Maxwell Motor Company became the Chrysler Corporation, and the next day the Chrysler Four was introduced. The point being that Chrysler built the first Chrysler Six while still at Willy’s Overland and it was transferred to Billy Durant when Willy’s went into receivership and Billy outbid Walter. The Chrysler Six will still with Maxwell Motor Company was introduced in January of 1924…but came at a price of $1500, a very favorable car with performance, hydraulic brakes and engine features. But, the reality is that the customer could purchase a Chevrolet or Ford for $500…therefore Chrysler needed to create an automobile that would compete with the low price market.
